Planning Your Trip
  • What routes do you recommend?
Our preferred routes are Machame and Lemosho, but each of Kilimanjaro's routes have their own charms. Our guides will make sure you have an enjoyable, safe experience on any route.
  • What kind of weather should I expect on Kilimanjaro?
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and it is subject to a very particular weather. It is not possible to predict exactly what weather you will encounter, but based on our experience we can say that generally daytime temperatures at most altitudes over 8,000ft/2500m range from 60 to 80F (15 to 25C) and at night can go down to 32F (0C). At the base and surrounding areas, it is generally warm or hot, depending on the time of year. As you ascend, the weather will get cooler and eventually will become very cold. Before your departure, we will supply you with all the information you need to pack for the various weather you will encounter. We use high-quality North Face tents and other equipment that ensure that you will be comfortable and safe.
  • What kind of food do you serve? Can you accommodate special dietary needs?
Our cooks are specially trained to ensure that climbers receive the necessary energy and nutrition in their meals. Food is made with fresh, healthy ingredients and is a mix of western and local cuisine. At East African Voyage, we believe that even the hardiest adventure climber deserves a little something special during their Kili climb, and our menus are designed to combine not just nutrition and health, but also a little extra dash of luxury! We are able to accommodate special dietary restrictions. Please inform your sales representative of any special dietary needs before your departure.
  • What equipment do you provide?
We provide North Face tents and, if you choose a 'luxury' climb, portable toilets, chairs, and other extras. Climbers can rent equipment such as poles or sleeping bags at an additional cost. Before your departure, we will supply you with a complete packing list. Your luggage must meet strict weight requirements of 22 or 33lb/10 or 15 kg (adventure/luxury options). Climbers should bring a day pack that they will use to carry personal items such as a camera and water. We strongly recommend climbers use climbing poles and make sure to bring adequate sun protection.
  • How safe is it?
One of the reasons for Kilimanjaro's popularity is that it doesn't require any technical skill to climb. However, it is still a significant physical undertaking in a harsh environment. While deaths are extremely rare, illness and injury, primarily altitude sickness, can affect even the fittest climber. East African Voyage believes that the safety of its clients is of the utmost importance, and our guides receive regular training on safety procedures. Your guide will carefully monitor your condition as you ascend the mountain, keeping an eye out for signs of problems, and will deal with them professionally and efficiently if problems do arise. Our guides will also pace the climb to allow for maximum acclimatization, which is the biggest factor in preventing altitude sickness and ensuring success.
  • Are you a member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project?
Yes, we are. We believe that every mountain worker deserves to be treated fairly and ethically. We are highly involved in supporting the Porters Assistance Project and we hold ourselves to the highest standards of porter treatment, making sure our porters are properly equipped and fed and are paid a fair wage.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
Please refer to our terms and conditions, to the right, for this and other information about our policies.
Before You Go
  • What should I pack?
Before your departure, we will send you a complete packing list, or you can download the 'Kili info list' at the right. You will need layers of clothes to accommodate the varying weather, including heat, cold, and rain. Clothes should be made of synthetic materials rather than cotton, which is slow-drying. Climbers should be sure to break in their hiking boots well before climbing Kilimanjaro. Sleeping bags need to be four season or rated to -4 F (-20 C). Protection from the strong equatorial sun is essential, including hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Climbers are strongly encouraged to use climbing poles. If you have questions about the packing list you receive before you climb, feel free to contact us.
